On Thursday, August 30, 2007, Iowa moved another step in the direction of
removing the traditional values that made our county the "shining city on a
hill" as President Ronald Reagan described America just a few short years
ago. Judge Robert Hanson, in the Polk County Courthouse, struck down Iowa's
ban on homosexual marriage.
Our country began with a Constitution based upon Biblical values, but judges
all across America have not resisted the temptation to legislate laws
instead of merely interpreting the laws of the land or what the legislature
might do. In Iowa, the heartland of America, Judge Hanson's decision is so
wrong, so offensive to me and, I believe, the average Iowan that we need to
send a message of strong support for maintaining the definition of marriage
as the "union of one man and one woman." Part of President Reagan's quote
about the "shining city" included "God-blessed." How can America, and
especially Iowa, remain God-blessed when we move away from the Biblical
standards set forth for eternity? His ruling is a huge, offensive change
from the traditional way judges made their rulings when Biblical values of
what is right and wrong were always a foundational matter for their
decisions.
This shocking decision going against the view of a vast majority of Iowa's
citizens should be resolved by the people of the State. That can be done by
a Constitutional Amendment to the Federal Constitution and Iowa's
Constituion to further define marriage as a "covenant relationship between
one man and one woman."
Let's all work together to undo this activist judge's ruling and work for
the will of the people to be done in Iowa.
